Your check engine light can come on in one of two ways. First, it can turn on and start flashing, in which case you should pull over and shut the car off because a flashing check engine light indicates imminent damage to your engine. The second and most common way is that the light turns on and stays on, generally until you get it checked. At the Vern Eide Honda service department, we’re here to provide a Honda check engine light diagnosis so that you can know what’s going on and get it taken care of.
Unlike simple lights like “low fuel” or “oil change”, the check engine light is a little more complex. To understand it, we have to take a look at the fuel system, which includes everywhere your fuel goes, starting at the fuel tank and running to the exhaust system. The fuel system has multiple sensors that constantly sample the surrounding environment, and they have specific ranges that the elements they sample should fall into. If there’s a reading outside those ranges, the sensor sends a code to the computer, and the computer turns on the check engine light to notify you to get it checked.
Our expert technicians will first read the code, which tells them which sensor is giving beyond-normal readings, and from there they can investigate all of the causes of that reading. It may be as simple as your gas cap being left open, or it can be something more serious happening inside your Engine. Once we figure out the problem, we report back to you to let you know what’s going on.
We can always turn off the check engine light for you, but it will turn back on when the sensor takes another abnormal reading. The best choice is to take care of whatever problem, and our experts are ready to help. We’ll make sure your car is up and running again, preventing your engine from taking damage due to the issue, and you can relax in our customer lounge with our free Wi-Fi and free and fresh-baked cookies while we do it.
The check engine light is a valuable tool in keeping your fuel system (specifically your engine) in good repair. If the check engine light turns on, we’re happy to help you figure out why and what needs to be done, and then we’d be honored to help you fix it. Set up your appointment online today!
